SUMMARY:Transmission Time: Transmission Funding Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, September 21\, ACEG hosted a Transmission Time webinar exploring funding opportunities for transmission projects. \nRecent federal legislation\, including the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA)\, established several new revenue streams to support the needed build out of transmission. Panelists from the Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment and Loan Programs Offices walked through the funding programs they oversee\, including the transmission facilitation and tribal funding programs. Plus we heard from the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) about the role states can play in working with utilities and transmission developers to benefit from these funds and reduce the cost of transmission projects. \nFeatured panelists include: \n\nWhitney Muse — Chief of Staff\, DOE-Grid Deployment Office\nJonathan Abebe — Senior Technical Advisory\, DOE-Loan Programs Office\nJeffrey Genzer — General Counsel\, National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO)\nModerated by Shashank Sane — EVP for Transmission\, Invenergy\n\n  \n\n \nYou can download slides from the Loan Programs Office presentation and the Grid Deployment Office presentation. And you can view a list ACEG compiled of IRA and IIJA-supported funding opportunities here. \n

SUMMARY:Transmission Time: Long-Distance Transmission\, Reliability\, and a Clean Energy Future
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, March 16th from 1-2pm EST\, Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG) hosted an installment of their Transmission Time webinar series\, “Long-Distance Transmission\, Grid Reliability\, and a Clean Energy Future.” \nThe 21st century requires greater reliability and further electrification of our economy to achieve a clean energy future. The build-out of more long-distance transmission can enable the development of renewable energy resources over wider geographic areas and move excess power from resource areas to reach locations of major electricity demand. \nThis webinar explored the importance of long-distance transmission in supporting our nation’s grid reliability and what policymakers and the public should know about the environmental and economic benefits of transmission expansion. The webinar featured a presentation from Mark Lauby\, Senior Vice President and Chief Engineer at North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). Guest commentators included: Alison Silverstein\, Independent Consultant\, Alison Silverstein Consulting; Julia Matevosyan\, Chief Engineer\, Energy Systems Integration Group; Michael Goggin\, Vice President\, Grid Strategies. \nThe event was moderated by ACEG Executive Director\, Rob Gramlich.  \n  \nDownload the presentation slides here. SUMMARY:Transmission and the Future of Electric Power: A Conversation with the Authors of the New National Academies Report
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, The National Academies of Science\, Engineering\, and Medicine released a new report\, “The Future of Electric Power in the U.S.\,” which undertook a comprehensive evaluation of the country’s changing electric system and outlined recommendations for providing reliable and resilient energy as the U.S. pursues its decarbonization goals. On June 8\, 2021 at 2:00pm EST\, Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG) hosted the next installment of Transmission Time where we were joined by co-authors Karen Palmer and Susan Tierney as they reviewed their study\, their perspectives on the future of electric power\, and the role that transmission will play in a decarbonized energy landscape. According to the study\, “transmission planning and expansion have not kept up with the operational and regional delivery needs anticipated in a low-carbon\, resilient electric system.” The authors recommend that “Congress and the states should support the evolution of planning for and siting of regional transmission facilities in the U.S.\, with changes in federal law to: • Establish a National Transmission Policy; • Direct FERC to expand on the policy bases for regional transmission planning; • Give FERC the responsibility to designate new National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors and to approve interstate transmission lines in them; and\, • Direct DOE to provide funds to states\, communities\, tribes to enable meaningful participation in regional transmission planning and siting activities.” \nWatch a full recording of the event.
