After nearly two years of consideration, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) finalized its regional planning and cost allocation rule on May 13.

Nearly all aspects of modern life depend on a robust and reliable power grid. However, FERC’s last major update to transmission planning policies — Order No. 1000 — came more than a decade ago, and the electric grid is in a much different place today. As the first major update on regional planning since, FERC’s new final rule is a major step forward.

Panelists discussed what is included in the rule, what states and regions will need to do to comply, and what this means for ratepayers across the country. They also answered questions from the audience about the future of transmission under these new regulations.
