ACEG Transmission Time Webinar: Wildfires and Electric Transmission
July 22, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
A recent report from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) found that this summer there are anticipated adequacy risks due to expected extreme heat events that affect generation, wind output, and transmission systems, coupled with demand growth. With extreme heat and wildfires increasing in frequency over the last few decades, it’s more important than ever that the grid is thoughtfully planned to mitigate risks and outages. Furthermore, recent court decisions in the West about liability for wildfire costs have raised concerns that these extreme weather events could make it more expensive than ever to conduct regular utility businesses — which could have impacts on the clean energy transition, electricity costs, and more.
Panelists discussed the recent and potential future changes to how the costs of wildfires are borne, the potential impacts on the clean energy transition, and how new technologies, smart policy, and changes to regulation could be a part of the solution.
